Founder
The Daughters of Mars was founded by Lucy Hope, whose background is in textile innovation and functional materials development, with years spent working with natural fibres and health-focused coatings.
“I’m committed to designing the menstrual products I wish I had for myself, my friends, my sister, my nieces and all daughters everywhere.
Despite millions of tampons being used every month, they are not legally required to undergo medical-grade safety or biocompatibility testing in the UK or EU. Many tampons on the market contain materials, chemicals and heavy metals that have been linked to potential health concerns, despite being worn internally in one of the body’s most absorbent areas.
That’s not acceptable to us at The Daughters of Mars. So we’re changing it.
Our purpose is to transform menstrual products into proactive healthcare, empowering women to take control of their vaginal and gynaecological health at scale.
In a world where 1 in 3 women suffer needlessly from bacterial vaginosis and vaginal dysbiosis, we envision moving tampons out of the ‘sanitary’ aisle and into frontline medical-grade women’s health technology categories, preventing infection, reducing downstream disease burden and eliminating suffering through a product millions of women already use on a monthly basis.
Women deserve better than reactive care and silent suffering. We exist to transform everyday menstrual products into tools of prevention, power and health.
If you believe that women, sisters and daughters everywhere deserve much better, then help us create that future.”
Lucy is a recipient of the Women in Innovation Award and currently leads The Daughters of Mars alongside experts in women’s health, materials science and product safety, including leading bacterial vaginosis specialist Dr Philip Hay, with the aim of raising the standard of menstrual care.
